Paying Tribute

Today was an extraordinary day.  It was heart-stirring and moving, it was overwhelming and humbling, it was unprecedented.  Today was the Metropolitan Division benefit barbeque for Steve and our family in response to the events of April 4th.  To be truthful, Steve and I don't feel even remotely deserving of the love surrounding us today.  Steve, like the thousands of LAPD officers (the finest people we know), was just doing his job and I am just his wife.  There is nothing we have done to inspire such an outpouring of benevolence.  However, the outpouring proves one thing, that there are amazingly generous, good and kind souls out there that are responsible for uplifting the rest of us and showing us the good side of humanity.  For all the bad that we see, or may fall victim to, there is five times more good in the form of generous, gracious, compassionate people (all of you).  To all who attended today, thank you.  With all my heart, thank you.

On behalf of Steve and our entire family, I say thank you to all the hardworking people assigned to Metropolitan Division who made today possible.  In particular, I'd like to thank those from MOS who organized such a huge event, as well as Matt Mattu and his son Shehbaz, the 7-11 owners who donated drinks and so much more.  You are all truly superheroes.  To Lt. Bob Arcos and all of K-9, every single one of you and your families will always be in our hearts and someday, some way, I will find a way to show you how grateful we are to you.  For now, I can only say thank you.  Thank you, we love you.

Finally, I'd like to say a very, very special thank you to Andrew Jenkins, one of the brightest lights of our life.  Andrew, without you I have no idea where we'd be.  You are an amazing young man, a truly great person, and we couldn't possibly be any prouder of you.  We love you, Andrew.  I'm so mad at myself that I didn't get any good pictures of you today.

Instead of recalling stories about the day and the amazing event, I have chosen to just show my collection of photos from the event.  Here is my tribute to the LAPD family:

Great pics! "Just doing his job" and "just his wife" don't cut it for me with all due repect. You've let us into your life and we admire your accomplishments so much perhaps because we know that tragedy will strike everyone in our lifetimes and the hope is that we can respond & rebound with the grace and strength you've demonstrated. I know you have help but you're the anchor like in many homes. One of my favorite couple's scenes from any movie is at the link I pasted below. The couple in the scene reminds me of you two. Yes, you remind me of a lot of people. Anyway, I wrote a quote from this scene in a note to my wife recently in an attempt to be dashing but it might suit Steve better. Not because he's been wounded but because he had the guts to pick up the armor, put it on, and be in the fight.

Beth/Steve...I've been having a hard time with the blog and hope I can get this one up. Again Beth, your an amazing woman with all you do, referring to the previous blogs. But girl, you need to eat a burger..You look so great in your pics. Steve, it's just amazing to see the progress and how you've come so far. Your inner strength is an inspiration..My family and I get so much out of your blogs. It's amazing how this type of thing can effect others when they kind of live it through you. Thanks again for sharing it. We so look forward to seeing you again at church and have open arms for when your ready...

My husband and I were blessed and truly honored to meet Steve and Beth Jenkins at the benefit barbeque yesterday. Although my husband works as a reserve with LAPD Metro K-9, we don’t know Steve and Beth personally--yet we knew we had to attend. Like many people I’m sure who read Beth’s blog, we feel quite connected to this amazing family. For Beth to endure all that she has and still find time to write so eloquently about her daily experiences and challenges is beyond extraordinary. For me personally, meeting Beth was very emotional and overwhelming. I had to hug her. Thank goodness for big sunglasses because I couldn’t fight back the tears. They were good tears mind you, tears of admiration, joy and faith. We also met Steve and were able to talk to him for a few minutes. We were in complete awe of both his physical and mental strength. Steve is truly a hero. After meeting this remarkable couple, my husband and I both felt like we were in the presence of all that is kind, just and honorable in the world. Lately, when I am irritated by some minor annoyance of daily life, I stop and read Beth’s blog or simply think about the Jenkins family. I snap out of it immediately and realize that there is absolutely nothing to complain about. There are no words profound enough to express our admiration for Beth and Steve. We simply want to say, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your service. God bless you.

All day people came up to me and said did you see Steve? He is walking and talking! Steve where you are today could never have been imagined 6 weeks ago. I know how strong you are in mind and body but you have surpassed all of our expectations....we should not be surprised not when you have such an incredible support group of family and friends!!! Thank you for your courage and your heart! Beth it was great seeing Elmer and Marlen! Elmer thanks for watching my back as usual!
Love you all,

What a wonderful day! Thanks for posting the pictures...it's true what they say...a picture is worth a 1000 words!! The day must have been overwhelming with the outpouring of generosity....wish I could have been there!

Steve, you look FANTASTIC!! To think it's been only 6 weeks! Sometimes it feels like lots more than that when you think how far you've come!

I, too, am a huge fan of the picture of the triplets....precious!
